Baltic and Polish ministers to convene in Vilnius to discuss swine fever

“Agricultural sector in all European countries bear the devastating consequences of ASF; therefore, I hope that during the meeting with our neighbours from Estonia, Latvia and Poland we will look for solutions. AFS does not recognize national borders, the virus may spread in Europe any time; therefore, I think it is necessary to urgently take measures and to negotiate with the European Commission over assistance,” says Baltraitienė in a statement of the Ministry.

The meeting will be attended by Estonia’s Minister of Agriculture Ivar Padar, Latvia’s Minister of Agriculture Janis Duklavs, Undersecretary of State at Poland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Tadeusz Nalewajk, and their delegations.

As reported, ASF has been found in one of the largest pig farms in Lithuania. The Prosecutor General’s Office has launched an investigation into the outbreak. It is not ruled out that the farm complex could have be infected on purpose.

The African swine fever is a very dangerous, highly contagious viral disease that affects pigs and wild boars. It is not harmful to humans. In the event of contamination, all pigs within a designated area are to be put down in order to prevent even greater losses.
