The Baltic Rim Economies (BRE) review is an online publication issued 4-6 times a year. The BRE expert articles concentrate on economic and particularly business development in the Baltic Rim. Contributors for the review are from different backgrounds from high-level public and corporate decision-makers, representatives of academia, as well as several other experts who share their thoughts on changing topics. The diversity of contributions makes the review an excellent discussion forum for topics having wide influences on societies and especially on the Baltic region.
In addition to these broader general issues, the BRE review publishes special issues focusing on a particular current topic. The latest BRE review special issue focuses on trade policy (published 31st October 2022) and includes expert articles by, for instance, Anne Krueger, the Former First Deputy Managing Director of International Monetary Fund, discussing post-Trump administration U.S. trade policies, and Vidmantas Janulevičius, the President of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists discussing the impact of global events and trends on Lithuania and its economy.
Trade policy has become more intertwined with security and foreign policy issues and a central part of international relations as our global economies have faced new crises increasingly frequently. Just as we have been able to take a breath and have gained a flicker of the new normal, yet another disruption shakes our renewed balance. The global financial crisis in 2008, followed by the US – China trade war, global COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have all shaken the global structures that govern the increasingly interconnected trade and challenges the status quo in international relations.
Finding a way forward in this rapidly transforming context, it is necessary to find forums for advancing discussions between business, policy and academia to find sustainable and resilient solutions. Thus, the BRE review highlights topics such as these in its special issues and brings forwards open discussion on significant and current topics. Earlier special issues have been on Kaliningrad, Ukraine and Crimea, and energy and environment.
The Baltic Rim Economies review is an open-accesses publication and free of charge, you may register for the mailing list or read it online at https://sites.utu.fi/bre/.
