Baltic states agree to coordinate steps on domestic security

The agreement was signed by Lithuania’s Interior Minister Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas with his Latvian counterpart Rihards Kozlovskis in Riga on Tuesday, with the document to be signed with Estonia‘s Interior and Regional Affairs, Hanno Pevkur, in Tallinn on Wednesday.

“We just signed the agreement in Latvia an hour ago – i.e., on the cooperation among the three countries on public and home security, to pool the efforts of all three countries in case of some trouble in any of the states,” Barakauskas said in a telephone interview to BNS from Riga.

In his words, the joint expert committee “would respond to any threats, not just the ones coming from Russia.”

The minister’s public relations adviser Valdas Kaminskas told BNS said that the agreement envisages that the expert committee will coordinate actions of relevant institutions in charge of public peace and domestic security in the three countries.

Within two weeks, each country will have to nominate officials delegated to the steering committee.

In Kaminskas’ words, the agreement does not stipulate the committee’s management structure or other details, which will be discussed after the document has been signed.

The agreements are signed amid the growing fears of possible Russian provocations.
