Baltic states go down in FIFA World ratings

Lithuania, which has failed to qualify for the European championship in France next year, experienced the highest demotion, falling down 34 positions and closing the year 2015 in the 126th spot.

The demotion is down to the Lithuanian team’s unsuccessful performance in the qualification tournament for Euro 2016, where Lithuanians managed only three wins, one draw and six losses.

Latvia’s national football team has also fallen out of the top 100. The Latvians took the 101st position in the last ranking update by FIFA, falling down from 96th place they ranked at the end of 2014. Latvia, which played in Group A in the qualifications tournament, failed to score a single victory.

Estonia, which played in the same qualification group E as Lithuania, is the only Baltic state to preserve a spot in the top 100. Still, the Estonians lost nine positions, going down from the 84th position to the 93rd. In the qualifications, Estonia scored three victories, one draw and six defeats, same as Lithuania, but had a better goal record and therefore took a place above Lithuania.
