The regulator commented on the Peer Review Report of the EU Stress Test in Belarus published by the Commission on Wednesday.
VATESI Head Michail Demčenko said that the scope and importance of the recommendations to Belarus revealed numerous serious shortcomings in the design of the plant, adding that Lithuania will continue to raise questions about the choice of the site and the project’s incomplete environmental impact assessment.
“Based on the best European and international practice, Lithuania also raises and will continue to raise other important safety issues regarding the choice of the inappropriate site for the power plant just 40 kilometers from Vilnius and the assessment of its safety, the failure of assess the impact of a heavy aircraft crash in the design of the plant, and non-compliance with other present-day safety requirements,” he said.
According to VATESI, Lithuanian experts actively participated in the stress tests organized by the EC and the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG), submitting 160 questions to Belarus’ national report, taking part in working group meetings and visiting the Astravyets plant. European experts submitted a total of 464 questions to the report.
