“There’s common agreement to support Ukrainian President Poroshenko’s peace plan. Not only support it but also help to implement it, if possible” Butkevičius told BNS in a phone call from Tallinn Saturday after meeting with his Latvian and Estonian counterparts.
Butkevičius believes humanitarian, financial, and expert assistance must be rendered to Ukraine if possible.
Butkevičius said the Baltic prime ministers discussed new possible sanctions against Russia if the situation in Ukraine worsens.
The Lithuanian prime minister also stressed the importance the association agreements the European Union is scheduled to sign with Ukraine, Georgia, and Moldova next week.
“Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia need to integrate into Europe as soon as possible,” Butkevičius said.
On Friday, Poroshenko unveiled a peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing insurgency in the east of Ukraine. The 14-point plan came after Poroshenko held several phone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.
The Ukrainian president proposed that the government not prosecute insurgents who have not committed serious crimes and that the government create a safe corridor for pro-Russian separatists to leave conflict areas. The document also urged local institutions to resume their work.
