China geologists interested in Lithuanian shale resources

During the meeting, the Chinese delegates presented achievements in finding, researching, and evaluating shale gas and oil resources, plans in researching shale which contains hydrocarbons, and prospects of shale gas extraction in the discovered cluster with three cubic feet of shale gas.

Since the most promising shale oil and gas resources in China are found in the same early Paleozoic to early Silurian strata as in the Baltic Basin, both heads of delegations highlighted possibilities of cooperation in developing the analytical tools in researching and exploring geological resources.

After the meeting, experts of the Lithuanian Geological Survey went to the Lithuanian Geological Museum of core storage. Along with the Chinese representatives, they conducted a review of early Paleozoic strata core profile and took the most representative samples of clay shale and other rock core from nine wells in western Lithuania for further analytical studies. Those core samples will be analysed by Wuxi Research Institute of Petroleum Geology oil analysis lab, which will be carrying out geochemical surveys and analysis of organic matter.

The results will be submitted to the Geological Survey of Lithuania and the results will be used to determine the potential of non-conventional geothermal resources – shale gas and oil.
