This week 15min.lt asks Ingrida Šimonytė and Gitanas Nausėda, who reached the second round of presidential elections about their opinions on climate change and what actions Lithuania should take in regard to it.
Ingrida Šimonytė states that the issue is a challenge that is forcing the world community to take active steps in seeking solutions on both the national and international level.
“Decisions are linked to two matters – firstly it is reducing pollution, secondly – it is seeking to adapt to the consequences. […] In Lithuania’s case, the adaptation to climate change measures are primarily linked to reducing impact on agriculture and infrastructure. As such, planning is needed that reflects the challenges,” the politician said.
Gitanas Nausėda finds climate change denial to be akin to some people’s views on vaccination.
“According to scientists, it is namely the Baltic States and Finland that will, in the long term, be most impacted by climate change,” he says.
The candidate believes that there is need for ambitious goals. “A number of European countries are aiming to be 100% renewable energy powered, I believe this should also be a clearly stated goal of Lithuania,” G. Nausėda states.
