Clinton would be more Lithuanian-friendly US president, political scientist says

“Clinton is far more combative than Barack Obama. She supported the Iraq war, she supported the NATO attacks on Libya, which were in part unlawful, she said that (Russian President) Vladimir Putin was acting in Ukraine like Hitler did in the Sudetenland. Therefore, if friendliness towards Lithuania correlates with hostility towards Russia, then Clinton will be friendlier towards Lithuania, as she is more determined to use the American power, if it means that the country will be engaged in war again,” Girnius told BNS.

He emphasized, however, that Lithuania was already getting sufficient attention from the United States and Obama.

Speaking about the odds of Clinton becoming the US president, Girnius said she stood a rather good chance but may be disadvantaged by the fact a democratic president has been in the White House for two terms already.

“The chances are rather good in the sense that she is the only serious candidate of the Democrats, she will not have another election battle where she could be harmed. Meanwhile, the Republicans will have a very tough fight among themselves. The Democratic Party has a better demographic setting – they have support of the Spanish-speakers, the blacks and many women. Under normal circumstances, if the groups vote proportionally, the chances are higher for the Democrats to win,” said the political scientist.

“Normally, it is very rare in America that a party stays in power for more than two terms,” he added.

With a pledge to be a “defender of ordinary Americans”, Clinton opened her election campaign with the ultimate goal of becoming the first female US president.
