Following a meeting with President Dalia Grybauskaitė, the commander of the paramilitary organization criticized a recent survey showing that the majority of people believe Lithuania would withstand a Russian attack only for a few days.
“There were reports on a public survey several days ago that Lithuania would not be able or capable to defend itself in the event of aggression. In my opinion, it’s a targeted informational battle aimed at undermining self-confidence. The Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union says the opposite: we are definitely capable and we will resist, which was not the case in 1940,” Gumbinas told journalists at the Presidential Palace.
He has stressed that Lithuania is already engaging in active resistance, as the country is promoting civil activity and is not succumbing to informational propaganda.
“The tasks of the Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union are very broad-ranging, from armed assistance to aid to civil institutions, helping Ukraine, which is being done at the moment. That potential, 7,500 people, is a great way to serve our homeland,” he said.
