Defence chiefs defend Boxer deal as best option

Head of the Armed Forces of Lithuania, Jonas Vytautas Žukas explained that a decision was made to order a cheaper turret model produced in Israel which made the whole purchase a third cheaper. He also said that while other vehicle options were only at a prototype stage, Boxer vehicles had been tested in battlefields like Afghanistan.

“Another important thing is that Boxer is already in production, while all other options would have had to be ordered. Moreover, some of the options were only prototypes and Boxer is already tested in combat in Afghanistan and other places,” said Žukas.

Žukas said that the decision was also made on the basis of the safety of the soldiers. Boxer has the fifth–highest level armour available, and he said that the vehicles had the best balance between armour and engine selection.

The boxer vehicles will be equipped with 30 mm cannons. “30 mm cannon can deal with the most modern tracked conveyors and infantry fighting vehicles, as well as with the vehicles of our potential adversaries. The turret also has an integrated anti-tank system that can reach targets 4km away,” he said.
