Energy minister, new Ignalina NPP CEO to discuss N-plant’s decommissioning

The latter is officially appointed Ignalina’s CEO as of Jun. 22, under the energy minister’s order.

“The energy minister and Ignalina NPP’s new CEO Kamienas and other members of the management will discuss further work related to the NPP’s decommissioning and its progress,” Aurelija Vernickaitė, spokeswoman for the minister, told BNS Lithuania.

Kamienas won the competition of Ignalina’s CEPO on Jun. 5 He then told BNS Lithuania that transparency would be one of his key priorities as the power plant is facing two major projects of building a radioactive waste repository and the deconstruction of its reactor.

Kamienas also said the existing contractor – German company Nukem controlled by Russian nuclear energy corporation Rosatom – would not be able to vie for major Ignalina orders due to threats to national security.

Lithuania made the commitment to decommission Ignalina NPP when the country joined the European Union. The nuclear facility stopped producing power in late 2009, and its decomissioning is set to continue until 2038.
