Event in Lithuanian N-plant wasn’t nuclear incident – regulator

“The irregularities cannot be classified as incidents under the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) as worker exposure limits were not exceeded and no release of radioactive material or exceedance of radiation levels in loading casks with radioactive waste was recorded,” the Lithuanian State Nuclear Power Safety Inspectorate (VATESI) said in a statement on Tuesday.

VATESI said that the hot tests that were halted in late December will be resumed only after the problem has been fixed.

According to the authority, it turned out during the hot tests that some of the radioactive waste removal equipment did not meet the technical design requirements.

The hot tests in the plant’s new solid radioactive waste storage complex, which involved using radioactive waste to test technological operations, were stopped on Dec. 29, 2017.

The testing of other equipment continues, the regulator said.
