Expatriate communities support Lithuanian Card but seek dual citizenship

Dalia Henke, the chairwoman of the Lithuanian World Community, said that privileges guaranteed in the country would contribute to preserving the connection. “This is one of the ways,” she said.

In Henke’s words, settlement of the dual citizenship issue is the most important thing for Lithuanians living outside the country, which would allow Lithuanians who emigrated after 1990 and have acquired passports of other countries to keep their Lithuanian citizenship.

According to Lietuvos Žinios, Justice Minister Juozas Bernatonis should this autumn initiate a more specific proposal regarding the Lithuanian Card – a special document for persons of Lithuanian origin living abroad. Holders of the card may be granted long-term free visas, along with a right to free education and medical services in Lithuania.

A referendum on dual citizenship has been proposed to be held in conjunction with parliamentary elections in October 2016.
