Five foreign soldiers get metal poisoning during training in Lithuania

Two of the five troops are in a more serious condition and the remaining soldiers are feeling better, National Defence Minister Juozas Olekas told journalists after a Cabinet meeting on Monday.

“A training event was taking place, and smoke grenades were used, and they probably stayed in that area for too long. Their health deteriorated and they were taken to a Marijampolė hospital where they received necessary treatment and were later taken to Kaunas Clinics. Several of them are already there and the rest will be moved shortly,” Olekas said, adding that the ongoing investigation would show how the troops got poisoning and who is responsible.

The Ministry of National Defence said earlier in the day the soldiers were in a stable condition under medical supervision and are receiving symptomatic treatment.
