The Order of the Rising Sun with Gold Rays and Neck Ribbon was awarded for Vaitkus’ merits in promoting mutual understanding and exchange of economic and technological relations between the two countries, the Japanese Embassy said on Tuesday evening.
“We expect the award to further promote and enhance the evolution of Japanese-Lithuanian ties,” the embassy said in a press release.
Vaitkus is the president of the Lithuanian-Japanese Friendship Association, as well as the president of the alumni association who have studied in Japan.
According to the press release, Vaitkus’ mediation with Vilnius officials resulted in a Sakura Park named after Japanese diplomat Chiune Sugihara, Vaitkus has initiated a number of events and seminars with Japan to “help promote the spread of Japanese policies”.
