ForMin thinks that elections gave fresh view of ties with Poland

In Linkevičius’ words, the bilateral meeting focused on security matters. The meeting was held in the margins of the session of NATO foreign ministers in the Belgian capital.

“We agreed to continue our active cooperation, I have again invited Waszczykowski to come to Vilni us, we’ll see how he can plan his time,” Linkevičius told BNS in a telephone interview from Brussels on Wednesday morning.

“In light of the new government taking office in Lithuania, there is willingness to take a fresh look at the relations and use all the potential,” said the Lithuanian minister.

In his words, the neighboring countries share the same interests on stationing of NATO capacities and on the relations with Russia.

“There are various initiatives on arms control, on the dialogue with Russia. We harmonize our positions and they match. We do not want to destroy the settled security architecture in Europe,” said Linkevičius.

The Lithuanian-Polish ties have been overcast by clashes on national minorities, an issue that has kept the two countries from holding top-level bilateral visits for the past five years. Their officials usually discuss bilateral issues in other formats.
