The report came after Defence Minister Juozas Olekas met with Deputy Inspector of the German Army Lieutenant General Jörg Vollmer in Vilnius.
In Vollmer’s words, Germany will deploy rotating forces, i.e., a company with equipment, in Lithuania in April through July. In June, German soldiers will join international exercise Iron Wolf in Lithuania. Additional companies will be sent to exercises held in July and November.
“This way, the total of 500 German military is expected to visit Lithuania this year,” the Defence Ministry said in the press release.
Germany also plans contributing soldiers to the NATO Force Integration Units (NFIUs) to be established in the Baltic states and other Eastern European countries.
The US has stationed a company of troops in each of the Baltic states and Poland since the spring of 2014.
