Gintė Damušytė to be new Lithuanian ambassador to Denmark and Iceland

The government approved her appointment as ambassador on Thursday.

If President Dalia Grybauskaitė gives the go-ahead, Damušytė, 60, will take up her new position on Aug. 12. She will replace Vytautas Pinkus, who has been Lithuania’s ambassador to Denmark since 2011.

Born in the US, Damušytė earned degrees in history and political science in the States. Following the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, she joined Lithuania’s mission to the United Nations. Subsequently, Damušytė led Lithuania’s delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), served as Lithuania’s ambassador to NATO, as an ambassador-at-large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a coordinator of Lithuania’s support to Afghanistan and as an ambassador to Canada. Since 2013, she has headed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Lithuanians Living Abroad.

In Lithuania, ambassadors are appointed and dismissed by the president, with proposals coming from the government with the approval of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. The committee has already approved Damušytė’s nomination.
