Gold-winning Lithuanian swimmer Meilutytė says the season exceeded her expectations

The seventeen-year-old girl says that she has never sought after titles, but it really makes her happy. “It changes a lot. No one has ever done this before and it is a big achievement for me,” says the athlete.

Meilutytė never planned when exactly she would achieve this. She did not think about the possibility of making history before the beginning of the season. The chance came naturally.

“To tell the truth, I never thought when I would do this. We have never aimed that high, but we saw that this is possible. In this season, I managed to participate in all competitions and I am glad that I did it,” says Meilutytė.

After her arrival in Berlin, she gave an exceptional interview to DELFI. During the interview, she said that not every medal satisfied her. Sometimes she is not content with herself when she does not show the best result possible.

On Sunday in Berlin her result was 29.89 seconds, leaving her opponents behind. This is not the best result of Meilutytė, but she says that she is content with it.

“This medal is sweet for me and I am very satisfied. I wanted to swim a little faster. But feeling tired after the tour, it is good enough to show a good time and to win, especially this season,” says the athlete.

Congratulations from president

President Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated swimmer Meilutytė with the first place in the 50-meter breaststroke swimming at the European Swimming Championship in Berlin.

“The constantly rising curve of your winnings became a symbol of endless possibilities for Lithuania, especially the youth. Because of you, a lot of people feel capable of achieving their goals and winning,” says the head of the state.

President wishes Meilutytė to continue on her path of victories.
