Govenrment plans to step up border protection

The plans include buying a new patrol vessel, high-speed boats, hovercrafts and drones in the next few years, as well as building a fence on the border stretches with Belarus and the Russian Kaliningrad region by 2020.

“The fence is merely one of the components to be used to prepare the border protection infrastructure. The most efficient way is not just building the fence but also installing a video surveillance system. A fence alone without the system is not very efficient,” Renatas Požėla, chief of the State Border Guard Service, told BNS.

Some 3.6 million euros for the fence along the border with the Kaliningrad region is envisaged in the 2017 budget. The surveillance system on the border and the border with Belarus should be installed in later years.

The government has also pledged to buy drones for border guards by 2020.

According to the plan, border guards should also receive new hovercrafts for search-and-rescue operations in the Curonian Lagoon, as well as high-speed boats for responses to border violations in the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon.
