Iceland inspires Lithuania to support Ukraine, President Grybauskaitė says

Grybauskaitė underlined that Iceland demonstrated exceptional courage in February 1991, when it recognized Lithuania’s independence despite Russia’s pressuring and set an example for other countries.

“It allowed us not only to break the ice in the area of international recognition but it also served as moral support for us. We saw that we were not alone,” the Lithuanian president told a joint press conference with Iceland’s President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson.

“Such moral support is important for every country fighting for its sovereignty, freedom and independence. Therefore by taking into account this example, today Lithuania, sometimes also being almost alone, is trying to support Ukraine,” the Lithuanian president said.

Grimsson is in Lithuania for a two-day visit at the invitation of the Lithuanian president and will attend the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the restoration of Lithuania’s independence.

Lithuania is among the strongest supporters of Ukraine in the EU as its government forces are fighting pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country.
