The number of marriages has been on the rise as well. January to June, there were 4,220 marriages registered in Latvia, which is 370 marriages more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. In June, 1,377 marriages were concluded in the country – 95 more than in June 2013, according to information of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.
In the first six months of 2014, 14 324 people in Latvia passed away, which is 720 fewer than in the corresponding period of the previous year. 2,111 of them died in June.
With the number of births lagging still behind the number of deaths, natural population growth in Latvia remains negative. In January–June 2014, as the number of deaths exceeded the number of births, the number of Latvian residents decreased by 3,855 (in January–June 2013 – by 5,035).
Latvia’s population on 1 July 2014 was estimated at 1,995,600.
