It is the first trip of the newly elected Latvian president to Lithuania and his second foreign visit after inauguration after his trip to Estonia.
During their meeting in Vilnius, the two presidents will address issues of concern to the Baltic region and the European Union, the current security environment and deeper security cooperation, the situation in Ukraine and the implementation of the Minsk agreements. Among the other topics on the agenda will be measures to counter increasing propaganda.
The presidents of Lithuania and Latvia will also discuss bilateral and economic cooperation. Both countries share a wide range of interests and work on joint energy and transport projects which are successfully developed.
Views will be exchanged on matters of importance to the whole of the European Union, including the further development of the Eastern Partnership program and solutions to the Greek crisis. The results of the Latvian Presidency of the EU Council will be reviewed.
Vejonis, 49, was elected president of Latvia on June 3 and sworn into office on July 8. In Latvia, the president is elected by parliament.
