Latvian president will not attend 9 May celebrations in Moscow

The president’s decision came following the EU Foreign Council’s meeting in Brussels on 19 January, as well as actions perpetrated by Russia and the situation in eastern Ukraine – the deaths of civilians.

Berzins said he would stay in Latvia to pay tribute to those who died in World War II.

Until now, President Berzins refused to publicly reveal his decision. The president merely said that he could perhaps visit Moscow before or after 9 May. Berzins previously said that he had already decided whether to go to Moscow on 9 May, saying that this had “been inside him his whole life”.

Asked when his decision could be known to the public, the president said: “Time will tell when this is necessary, as I am not alone in this game”.

Russia is preparing for large-scale celebrations to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
