Lithuania at Rio Olympics: Day 3

Rowing

Lithuanian rower Armandas Kelmelis (18) competed in the Repechage race in the single sculls event. After finishing fifth in the heats with a time of 7:35.59 minutes, Kelmelis was much better in the Repechage race and finished first with a great time of 7:13.36 and advanced to the quarterfinals.

In the quadruple sculls event, the Lithuanian team of Aurimas Adomavičius (22), Martynas Džiaugys (29), Dominykas Jančionis (23) and Dovydas Nemeravičius (19) finished fifth in the heat with a time of 5:58.70 minutes and advanced to the Repechage race where they finished in the third position with a time of 5:55.78. The four advanced to final B where they will compete for rankings, while in the final A the prize is the medals.

Sailing

In men’s RS:X event, Juozas Bernotas (29) competed in the first three races where he finished in the 19th, 23rd , 17th positions. Bernotas will try to improve his spot in the last nine races in order to get an opportunity to compete in the medal race.

In the women’s laser Radial event, Lithuanian sailor Gintarė Scheidt was disqualified in the opening race, but she managed to win the second one. Scheidt has eight races to go before the medal race. In Beijing Olympics, the Lithuanian finished with a silver medal and will try to repeat this achievement.

Swimming

It was a huge disappointment for the Lithuanian star Rūta Meilutytė (19) who finished in the seventh position in the 100m breaststroke final with the time 1:07.32, almost four seconds behind her world record that she claimed in 2013.

Meilutytė’s time was 1:06.35 in the heats and 1:06.44 in the semifinals. After the final race, the Lithuanian left the pool with tears in her eyes, but with a big hug from the nation.

American Lilly King won the gold and claimed a new Olympic record, finishing the race in 1:04.93 minutes. The silver medal went to Russian Yuliya Yefimova, who finished in 1:05.50, while the bronze medal went another member of team USA, Katie Meili, who finished third with a time of 1:05.69 minutes.
