Lithuania condemns Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine

Lithuania suggests raising the issue with the United Nations Security Council as soon as possible.

“Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemns the start of an obvious military invasion into the territory of Ukraine by the armed forces of the Russian Federation,” the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the ministry, Russia’s actions constitute a gross violation of the fundamental norms and principles of international law and international agreements. They also violate Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and pose threat to security in the whole region.

“Lithuania demands immediate withdrawal of Russia’s armed forces, weaponry and military equipment from the territory of Ukraine and stop any assistance to armed separatists in the east of Ukraine,” the ministry said, having no doubt that “the ongoing and growing flow of weapons and armed military groups from the Russian Federation to eastern Ukraine and the Russian armed forces’ actions in the territory of Ukraine will receive proper response of the international community and its institutions.”

Ukrainian officials say separatists, supported by Russia, are taking over control of new territories in the east of the country.
