“Russia’s unilateral decision to bring the convoy of humanitarian aid into the territory of Ukraine without the latter’s assent and without the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross escorting the convoy is a clear violation of international law. Such actions of Russia contradicts earlier agreements among Russia, Ukraine and the Red Cross,” said the permanent representative of Lithuania.
Murmokaitė underlined that humanitarian aid must be provided according to the existing standards and principles of international humanitarian law; the issue of humanitarian aid shall not be used in seeking one’s political or military goals. Lithuanian representative also expressed concerns about the continuous supply of Russia’s armament to the separatist and the flow of foreign fighters to Eastern Ukraine.
Consultations of the UN Security Council were held on Lithuania’s initiative in response to Russia’s latest actions in Ukraine.
