The EU has pledged to provide Turkey with €3 billion in support for refugees in the country. €2 billion of those funds will be transferred from member states, who will contribute according to the sizes of their economies.
At a meting held in Brussels this week, EU leaders formed a preliminary agreement with Turkey in which Turkey has agreed to receive illegal immigrants who have made it to Greece. Turkey has offered to send Syrian refugees from its own refugee camps in Turkey to be relocated to locations throughout Europe in exchange for the flow of migrants being sent away from Greece.
A final decision should be passed by the European Council on 17-18 March.
Turkey has received 2.7 million refugees, which is more than any other country over the last 5 years of the civil war in Syria. However, many of those refugees and migrants have continued on to Western Europe.
