Lithuania set to recruit more conscripts next year

Earlier this week, Defense Minister Raimundas Karoblis signed a decree to recruit 3,800 new troops, while just over 3,500 young men and women are serving or are readying to start service now.

“Consistent increase of conscripts is one of the strategic tasks to prepare as many as possible troops of the active reserve who could be mobilized for state defense, if needed,” Vita Ramanauskaitė, spokeswoman for the defense minister, told BNS.

Up until now, all conscripts have been joining the service on voluntary basis.

Lithuania reintroduced the conscription scheme in 2015 in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and the Baltic Sea region.
