Lithuania steps up vigilance before LNG ship arrival

The minister told BNS that Lithuanians are keeping in touch with their Swedish counterparts currently searching for a foreign submarine near its shores.

“We have stepped up our vigilance as we are awaiting the arrival of the Independence ship and we must ensure its safe docking in the Port of Klaipėda. We are ready to meet and accompany our ship,” Olekas said.

“Every report of such an incident is a serious challenge and we must take it very seriously. The safety of the Baltic Sea is especially important now when we have this new opportunity to ensure energy security by using the ship which will create those new conditions,” Olekas said.

The LNG ship-terminal is scheduled to arrive in Lithuania next Monday and it will provide the opportunity for Lithuania to import gas by sea as an alternative to Russian gas.

The Swedish army reported on Sunday it is carrying out an intelligence operation to identify the location of a foreign submarine.

On Friday, Sweden said it had intercepted a Russian submarine’s distress sign in the water area between Stockholm and the Russian region of Kaliningrad. The information has not been officially confirmed yet.

Asked by BNS whether Lithuania has intercepted similar distress signals, Olekas said he had no such information.
