Under a draft prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomat who currently heads the ministry’s Information and Public Relations Department, should take the post on 20 July.
Puodžiūnas has been working at the Foreign Ministry since 1993, he has served as Lithuania’s ambassador to Austria.
The diplomat worked in Vienna during the time when Austria allowed a former KGB officer Mikhail Golovatov leave immediately after detention. Lithuania wants to bring him to justice for the Soviet aggression in Vilnius in January 1991. After the incident, Lithuania recalled Puodžiūnas back to Vilnius for a few months in sign of protest.
Puodžiūnas, 47, should replace Jonas Paslauskas in Tbilisi.
In Lithuania, appointment of ambassadors requires a presidential decree and the government’s approval.
