Lithuania to help set up psychological rehabilitation centres in east Ukraine

“It is a joint initiative of Lithuanian and Ukrainian ministries of health. During expert visits, an agreement was reached that Lithuania could contribute to the establishment of the rehabilitation centres in Dnepropetrovsk and Poltava,” Lithuania’s Ambassador to Ukraine Marius Janukonis told BNS.

Arvydas Skorupskas, adviser to Lithuanian Health Minister Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė, said that the psychological rehabilitation centres will offer services to all persons who have been affected by the war in Eastern Ukraine.

“The centres will be open to all people: refugees, soldiers, their family members and even prisoners,” Skorupskas told BNS.

In his words, Lithuanian specialists will go to Ukraine on a regular basis to train their Ukrainian colleagues to work “by European methods” of psychosocial rehabilitation.

The centres in Dnepropetrovsk and Poltava should be opened in late 2015.

According to data provided by the United Nations (UN), more than a year of fighting between Ukraine’s governmental forces and Russian-supported separatists has already claimed more than 6,100 lives.
