Lithuania to send note to Belarus over nuclear plant incident

“We will send a note regarding information about the investigation of the incident,” Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius told BNS on Wednesday.

The Belarusian Energy Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that “an extraordinary situation” had occurred on the site when moving the reactor body earlier this month, but it did not comment in more detail on media reports that the 330-ton reactor body had been dropped from the height of several meters.

Lithuania has criticised the project, expressing concerns about Belarus’ failure to ensure safety at the plant in Astravyets, just 50 kilometres from Vilnius. Minsk has dismissed the criticism, saying it is unfounded.

Belarus plans to launch the first reactor in late 2018.
