According to the document, Varvuolis should be recalled from the ambassadorial position in Brussels on Jan. 31 and take the new office on Feb. 1.
Lithuania has had no ambassador to Japan since the summer after Egidijus Meilūnas was appointed as ambassador to Ireland.
Varvuolis joined the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry in 1995 and has served in a number of diplomatic missions, heading the ministry’s Threat Analysis, Crisis Management and International Operations Division and the NATO Division. The diplomat has also worked as political director of the Foreign Ministry’s Trans-Atlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department.
Varvuolis was appointed as Lithuania’s ambassador to Belgium in October of 2013.
In Lithuania, ambassadors are appointed by the president upon the government’s proposal and a green light from the parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
