Lithuanian expatriates don’t think dual citizenship referendum would be successful

“We believe a referendum will not solve the problem. MPs are starting to politicize before the upcoming parliamentary elections. Dual citizenship is a popular proposal, people want it but the politicians seem to fail to consider all circumstances,” the Lietuvos Žinios daily cited Vida Bandis, the Lithuanian World Community‘s representative in Lithuania, as saying.

In her words, expatriate communities abroad had long hoped that the dual citizenship issue would be settled by changing the Citizenship Law.

Dual citizenship is currently allowed for people only left Lithuania during the Soviet occupation and their descendants, but not for those who emigrated after the country regained independence in 1990.

The Constitutional Court has ruled that expanding the possibility of dual citizenship requires changing the country’s Constitution, which can only be dome by a referendum.
