The minister told BNS that the conversation with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini focused on Europe’s possible response to the actions of the Russian-supported separatists and the possibility to hold an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday.
Linkevičius said he and the Commander of US European Command General Philip Breedlove discussed the increased activity of Russian troops and the Moscow-backed separatists in Eastern Ukraine.
“The presence of troops in the Luhansk and Donetsk region, not just near Mariupol but also elsewhere has increased. The military campaign that is in progress is impossible without very sophisticated military equipment provided by the Russian army,” the minister told BNS.
The conversations took place after 30 people were killed in a missile attack on Saturday in the port city of Mariupol controlled by the Ukrainian government.
The US pledged to put pressure on Russia, while EU officials are considering a possibility to hold an extraordinary meeting of ministers. In Linkevičius’ words, the United Nations (UN) Security Council may also be convened on Monday to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
