Lithuanian parliament speaker asked to send weapons during visit in Ukraine

“They were asking for military assistance, i.e., weaponry, on all levels, leaders of parliamentary groups also joined the request. (They asked for) defensive weapons, they emphasized that they were talking about weapons needed for defence,” Graužinienė told journalists at the parliament on Wednesday.

The meeting with Oleksandr Turchynov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, addressed the upcoming exercise of Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian troops in Ukraine.

“They hope to learn from our experience during the tactical training, it is very important for them,” said Graužinienė.

In her words, Ukrainians are grateful to the European Union for its assistance and hope that the sanctions for Russia are extended.

Graužinienė was in Kiev earlier this week together with her Nordic and Baltic counterparts.

Lithuania says it provided Ukraine with “weaponry elements” it refused to specify. Since last March, Ukrainian forces have been fighting against Russian-supported separatists.
