“I seriously doubt European countries will send some kind of broad military assistance, I am speaking about the European Union‘s old members. The case can be different with the United States of America, but it is extremely difficult for me to project the size of the help. Clearly, military forces of Western countries will not participate in the confrontation,” political scientist Liudas Zdanavičius told BNS.
“The Western world has so far chosen the scenario of negotiations, which does not work. However, there have so far been no signs of their potential of demonstrating something more serious,” Laurynas Kaščiūnas, the head of the Political Analysis and Research Division at the Eastern Europe Studies Centre, added.
The analysts note that Ukraine is most likely to receive financial help from Western countries, with more support expected from the US, not Europe.
In Zdanavičius’ words, Russian escalation of the conflict is first of all determined by the fact that it would be extremely difficult for Russia to justify its withdrawal to the public, as it would be interpreted as humiliation: “The society is anxious, also due to the information campaign, and you cannot just simply say that you lost and will now step back.”
