The two presidents will discuss the security situation in Europe and NATO cooperation at their meeting in Lithuania’s second-biggest city of Kaunas, Grybauskaitė’s press office said.
The third rotational company of Portuguese troops is deployed for training in Tauragė, a town west of Kaunas. The country also actively participates in the Baltic air-policing mission and has contributed military personnel to NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius.
Grybauskaitė and de Sousa will discuss the EU‘s energy security and response to hybrid threats. Like Lithuania, Portugal operates a liquefied natural gas terminal and was among the first countries to import LNG from the United States.
The presidents will also discuss key issues on the EU agenda, including Brexit talks, response to the migration crisis, and closer EU cooperation on security and defense issues.
They will also pay great attention to bilateral relations. Portuguese investments in Lithuania have risen by more than a third in recent years, but there is still a large untapped potential for cooperation in the food and chemical industry, high technologies and other areas, the president’s office said.
