Lithuanian president, in New York, discusses defense cooperation with US, Norway

Issues discussed at the trilateral meeting included military cooperation, emerging threats from the East, and transatlantic security, with special focus placed on the need to ensure regional air defense over the Baltic states, Grybauskaitė’s press service said.

Energy security and the region’s energy independence were also discussed.

“The president underlined that a well-defined energy security policy should be also developed at NATO level. This is critically important now that conventional threats are replaced by hybrid warfare and dependency on a single energy source is used as an instrument of political manipulation and blackmail,” the press service said in a press release.

“It is essential not only to ensure diverse energy sources, but also to protect energy networks against possible subversive action or terror attacks, to counter increasingly frequent cyber-attacks and efforts to disrupt critical energy infrastructure, as well as to play out anti-hybrid warfare scenarios,” it said.

Grybauskaitė on Thursday delivered a speech at the General Assembly and presented a Lithuanian state decoration awarded to Senator John McCain to his widow, Cindy McCain.
