Following the Russian veto, the United Nations Security Council’s meeting in New York on Wednesday failed to pass a resolution on establishment of an international tribunal for identifying those responsible for the crimes in connection to the gunning down of Malaysian Airlines MH17 flight.
The civilian airliner was last July gunned down in Eastern Ukraine, which is still locked in an armed conflict between the country’s governmental forces and Russia-supported separatists.
The resolution was supported by 11 members of the UN Security Council including Lithuania, while three members – China, Venezuela and Angola – abstained. The draft resolution was submitted by Malaysia on behalf of the countries participating in the investigation group, which includes Australia, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Belgium and Malaysia.
