Started in the autumn of 2013, the Ukrainian Euromaidan movement overturned the pro-Russian leader Viktor Yanukovych after he refused to sign Ukraine’s association agreement with the European Union (EU) in Vilnius on 21 November 2013. The refusal triggered a chain of bloody events, which claimed dozens of lives of the so-called Maidan protesters.

After Yanukovych lost his post, Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula last March, and Kremlin-supported separatists took control of swathes of eastern Ukraine.
