DELFI / Kiril Čachovskij
This is one of NATO’s largest military exercises in Lithuania involving around 2.5 thousand military personnel from nine NATO member states.
The President will watch a combined operation being completed by troops participating in the exercise and view a display of military equipment and weaponry.
Exercise Iron Sword 2014 is a two-week event. In the first week, the exercise took place at the Gaižiūnai military training range in Rukla, in the second week – at the training area in Pabradė. The exercise is part of the NATO Military Training and Exercise Program. This is the first time Iron Sword is organized in Lithuania, from now on it is planned to take place annually.
The exercise checks the readiness of land troops to participate in the activities of the NATO Response Force. Lithuanian troops and military personnel from other NATO member nations are learning interoperability and coordination of actions.
More than 300 military vehicles of various roles are used in this exercise. Taking part in the event are troops from Lithuania, U.S.A., Canada, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Germany, Luxembourg, and United Kingdom.
