Lithuanian soldiers begin training in Trident Juncture

Lithuanian contingent will be training urban area, defensive, offensive and stability operations as part of the combined Baltic Battalion until 31 October. When that phase concludes, the Baltic Battalion will take part in a joint operation with battalions from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United States under the lead of Pain’s Army Brigade Headquarters.

The tri-national Baltic Battalion (BALTBAT) comprises 2 companies contributed by Estonia, one company from Latvia and one from Lithuania, the total of approximately 1,000 soldiers and 250 units of military equipment. A Forward Support Company formed by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania is providing support to the Battalion in the exercise location. The combined tri-national Battalion is getting ready for standby for the NATO Response Force in 2016 (NRF).

Roughly 200 Lithuanian soldiers are taking part in the exercise as part of the Baltic Battalion – a company and a headquarters element of King Mindaugas Hussar Battalion reinforced by an anti-tank platoon of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Kęstutis Mechanised Infantry Battalion. The Lithuanian Armed Forces have redeployed roughly 50 units of military equipment to Exercise Trident Juncture – HMMWV ATVs, SISU multirole trucks, and other vehicles.

Exercise Trident Juncture running until 6 November in Spain, Italy, and Portugal, and also in different locations in Belgium, Canada, Germany the Netherlands, and Norway is NATO’s largest exercise since 2002. The exercise scenario involves over 36,000 troops from over 30 NATO and partner countries completing land, maritime and air operations. Exercise Trident Juncture 2015 will train and certify NATO Response Force for 2016.

Apart from the military personnel from its Land Force, Lithuania also contributes mine hunter LNS Skalvis (M53) of the Lithuanian Navy to the exercise. Lithuanian soldiers deployed to take part in Exercise Trident Juncture receive support from Lithuanian military logistic specialists, military policemen and military medics.
