On the eve of the meeting, Lithuania’s Chief of Defense Major General Jonas Vytautas Žukas said that the NATO Military Committee would formulate advise on “forming NATO Immediate Response Force, command and establishment of operational elements, as well as measures of determent – presence of NATO forces in the Alliance’s Eastern part.”
The measures should be approved by NATO defence ministers in Brussels in early February.
The Baltic states, Romania and Bulgaria hope to host international headquarters with command and control elements. They also seek to have Allied military equipment stationed in their territories. In response to Russian aggression in Ukraine, NATO is also setting up Immediate Response Force, which should be fully operational by the NATO Warsaw Summit planned for May 2016.
