“The purpose of his visit is to go and meet with troops of the NATO Enhanced Forward Presence Battalion and top commanders of the Lithuanian army’s brigade Iron wolf, as the NATO battalion is assigned to the brigade,” Major Skomantas Povilionis, project officer at Iron Wolf, told BNS on the eve of the visit.
The US general who also serves as the commander of the United States European Command will also meet with Lithuania’s Chief of Defense Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas.
The international NATO battalions were stationed in each of the Baltic states and Poland last year in what the Alliance said was an effort to deter Russia after its aggression in Ukraine.
The unit deployed in Lithuania includes around 1,200 troops from Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Croatia and France. Iceland has assigned a civilian to the battalion.
