“We actually cannot oppose private healthcare,” said the minister in an interview to the Žinių Radijas radio on Tuesday.
According to her, provision of services in private and public healthcare institution has been discussed with the Department of Pharmacy, the State Medicine Control Agency and the National Health Insurance Fund.
“And we really believe that private healthcare should exist, but its payments should be regulated and the proposals regarding this were submitted by the mentioned institutions. We have to consider them and to establish the proportion, how much should be paid and in what ways services in private institutions should be compensated, so that public healthcare does not suffer. Private healthcare is also a part of the system,” said Šalaševičiūtė.
Šalaševičiūtė’s predecessor Vytenis Povilas Andriukaitis maintained a position that private healthcare institutions should not receive public funds. However, representatives of private healthcare and patient organisations were not happy with the former minister’s attempts to reform the system. According to them, the unnecessary confrontation between private and public healthcare caused by the minister misleads patients and leads to tensions.
