The three Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters will be based in posts in Nemirseta and Kaunas, where five crews have been trained to operate them.
They will be used to patrol, perform search and rescue operations at sea, fire-fighting, transporting medical patients and transplant organs and assisting state and municipal institutions in emergencies.
“The new helicopters are also needed to meet our obligations to NATO member states performing air policing here – to ensure search and rescue functions,” the Ministry of National Defence said in a statement.
The Lithuanian army signed the €52 million deal to purchase the three helicopters in 2013. They were delivered last year, the last one arrived in November.
