Parties agree to closer coordinate efforts to block Belarus’ N-plant

The leaders of eight parties pledged to unanimously support a law that would declare the Astravyets plant unsafe and ban selling electricity produced in the facility on the Lithuanian market.

They also agreed to set up a special group to coordinate actions by different institutions and non-governmental organizations.

The politicians plan “to make full use of the international parliamentary diplomacy available to the parliamentary parties, parliamentary committees and delegations while coordinating joint actions and drafting a joint action plan to ensure that other countries and international organizations contribute to the implementation of the abovementioned provisions relevant to Lithuania”.

The agreement was signed by Ramūnas Karbauskis of the Lithuanian Peasant and Green Union, Gabrielius Landsbergis of the Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats, Irėna Šiaulienė of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party, Eugenijus Gentvilas of the Liberal Movement, Rita Tamasuniene of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania–Christian Families Alliance and Linas Balsys of the Lithuanian Greens Party.

Lithuania says that Belarus fails to follow safety standards and international environmental requirements in building the plant, but Minsk rejects the criticism as unfounded.
